Passion Flower Maceration
Common Name: Maypop, Passion Flower
Scientific Name: Passiflora incarnata

Constituents: Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils, Flavonoids
General Information: The essential oil or the absolute is not available on the market. Tinctures are sometimes available. Passion flowers were discovered by missionaries sent to the new world to saved the natives. The missionaries thought the flowers symbolized the crucifixion. The fringed crown of the flower represented the crown of thorns worn by Christ. The three stigmas were the nails piercing the hands of feet of Christ. The five stamens were his wounds. The ten petals were for the apostles excluding Peter and Judas. The fruit of the passion flower is used to treat eyes. Unfortunately the flowers are not known for arousing the passions.
When I first planted the passion vine in our garden, I never saw a bloom. I thought the vine was not doing well as I had heard that it just thrives in the South. A friend of mine told me that it was blooming all over the garden. I could not see it. What was going on? She took me by the hand and made a formal introduction. Passion Flower this is Meg she is a good friend of mine and I know you will like her. Meg this is Passion Flower. From that day, I saw the flowers and they have gone on to bloom extensively through out the garden.
Physical Properties: Sedative. Use with insomnia, anxiety, and hyperactivity. Considered safe to use with children.
Emotional and Spiritual Properties: Can help you bring dignity back into your life. Can indicate that you have lost a sense of the sacred in your life. Ritual has a place those special ceremonies you do for yourself and others. Time to notice that you live in a magical world full of all kinds of opportunities. Relax and enjoy the trip. The simplest and most ordinary of things can become the most special of things. It all depends on how you want to see it and how you treat it. Treat it specially and it becomes special.
Applications: Great carrier for a blend to help relax or promote sleep. Valerian is usually the essential oil that is most blended with this maceration, but this could be too strong and more gentle oils like chamomile and lavender may be more effective. Good to put into a blend that is going to be used to create sacred space or be used in a sacred way. Can be made into lotions, creams, ointments, and balms.
