Lion's Tail Maceration

Common Name: Lion’s Tail, Lion’s Ear, Wild Dagga

Scientific Name: Leonotis leonurus

Part of Plant Used: Fresh Flowers and Leaves

Constituents: Fractionated Coconut Oil, Essential Oils, and Flavanoids

General Information: Lion’s tail is also a name for mother’s wort. This is not that plant. This plant can grow as high as six feet. It reaches into the air and looses its leaves as the stalk nears the ground. The top of the plant bushes out creating beautiful orange flowers, therefore the name – lion’s tail. It can bloom many times during the year and seems to be ideally suited to the coastal area of Texas.

The Hottentot tribe of South Africa use the leaves and flowers for its euphoric effects. There is a long history of medicinal use with this plant, but now mostly disregarded unless you are looking for a legal hallucinogenic. Leaves used to create a tea for upset stomach. There are no culinary uses as plant is too bitter. Eastern medicine uses lion’s tail as a euphoria, purgative, and vermifuge. Active component is leonurine that is water soluble.

Physical Properties: Relaxant properties. Herbal uses sited by references are water soluble and the maceration will not have these medicinal properties.

Emotional and Spiritual Properties: I was not going to make a maceration of this plant as I saw no medicinal value in it. I was about to leave for the Southeastern Herb Conference one year, when it burst into bloom. I knew I needed to make a maceration of it and I took it with me to the conference. I had no idea what it was for. Quickly I could see that is was very popular.

It came up when women of power wanting to get noticed or assert themselves could only do it in an obnoxious way. The plant seemed to let them know that they were indeed women of power but they need not assert themselves badly. These women felt easily overlooked and frustrated by the lack of recognition. Lion’s tail was very soothing to them and supportive in making them feel note worthy.
