Sesame Oil

 

Scientific Name: Sesamum indicum

Botanical Family: Pedaliaceae Family

Historical Information: The seeds and leaves have been eaten in Africa and India since ancient times. It is probably the oldest crop grown for its oil. References are found in ancient Egypt. Babylonian women used the oil with honey to increase their vitality for lovemaking and fertility. In India, lactating women take it to improve their breast milk.

Plant Description: Native to Africa and Asia growing to 6 feet producing white or pink tubular flowers creating white, yellow, red, brown, or black seeds depending on the species.

Constituents: Sesamol and sesamolinol (antioxidants), up to 50% linoleic acid, up to 50% oleic acid. There is a balance of monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Stability: Considered stable as containing antioxidants that act as preservatives

Method of Extraction: Seeds cold pressed also the seeds are hot pressed, refined and deodorized but this oil is of less quality. Oil is also made from roasted seeds but this is primarily for culinary use.

Medicinal Properties: Reported to improve blood platelet count and when massaged into the skin improves psoriasis, dry edema, and broken veins. It is also used for the digestive tract as high in calcium and not forming acid. It is a mild laxative. As a massage oil, it can improve rheumatic conditions.

Application:

Massage Oil: Usually 20% of massage oils, combines well with essential

oils

Skin care: lubricating creams

Food: toasted oils have the most flavor, used in stir frys, use sparingly as

taste can overwhelm dishes, and use as olive oil

Soap Making: Helps to preserve natural soaps

Hair Care: When mixed with olive oil, it can counter dandruff
