HISTORY INFORMATION: Probably has more in common with spike lavender than sage. The scent is more like spike lavender and is sometimes used to adulterate this oil. In Spain, it is used like lavender in that it is considered a cure-all.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Is now being commonly used to replace Sage (Salvia officinalis) which has high ketones and often carries contraindications. Spanish Sage has no contraindication and safe to use. Can be adulterated with camphor, eucalyptus, or pine. Greek or Turkish Sage (S. fruticose, S. triloba) is chemically very similar.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An evergreen shrub growing to 3ft with narrower leaves than common sage and has small purple flowers.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Anticatarrh, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-infectious, antispasmodic, astringent, analgesic, carminative, deodorant, depurative, digestive, emmenagogue, expectorant, febriguge, hypotensive, nerine, stimulant, stomachic, tonic (general). Used for acne, cuts, dandruff, dermatitis, eczema, excessive sweating, hair loss, gum infections, asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis, chills, coughs, laryngitis, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, poor circulation, colds, fever, flu, inducing menstruation, painful and difficult periods. headaches, nervous exhaustion.

Spanish Sage seems to be particularly soothing and comforting to the root and solar plexus while it balances the third eye. Allows one to clear out old, dead emotional issues especially around death or losing a loved one. It opens you to loving or being in relationship. The divine plan works through you and sometimes it looks like you are being tricked because sometimes you hide your plans from yourself. Spanish sage allows us to acknowledge these hidden agendas and coming to terms with "why bad things happen to good people."
