HISTORY INFORMATION: Native Americans of New England boiled the needles in water and drank the resulting tea to prevent scurry. The needles contain up to five times as much vitamin C as is contained in an equal weight of lemons. White Pine needles are also rich in vitamin A. The seeds were used to flavor meats cooked by the Ojibwa. The sweet inner bark was frequently eaten by the Iroquois.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The early settlers of Massachusetts were quick to recognize the value of white pine. They valued the species so highly that all silver shillings struck in the late seventeenth century bore the image of this tree. A turpentine oil is also made from this pine.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An evergreen tree growing to 150ft high with a straight reddish brown trunk and long green needles. The tree naturally exudes an oleoresin from the trunk which is made into turpentine.

PROCESSING METHODS: Steam or water distilled yields a crude oil which is fractionated under pressure.
