HISTORY INFORMATION: The plant has a strong citrus fragrance, like that in the famous Eau de Cologne and somewhat like Monarda (also called bergamot mint). It is used in cosmetics and fruit salad. We do not call this oil Bergamot Mint, because some drop the word mint, creating confusion with Bergamot (the orange oil).

GENERAL INFORMATION: There is some confusion over the parents of this mint. Some botanists believe that it is a separate species while others feel it is a variety of M. aquatica. I believe the variety M. aquatica is lemon mint and the Mentha Citrata here is a variety of M. piperita. The difference in the two plants is visible, as the lemon mint is very green whereas the Mentha Citrata is tinged purple.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A perennial herb growing to 3 feet with dark green, tinged with purple leaves that are finely toothed. The whole plant is dotted with yellow oil glands.
