The roots of lovage were the key ingredient of most of these medicines. The root alone was suppose to have a diuretic effect that would relieve jaundice, colic, stomach problems and obesity. The plant itself also had external applications. The leaves added to the bath water were for relieving skin and eye problems, fresh juice from the leaves and stems for curing pink eye. An infusion made from the seeds was used to ease freckles. Today lovage is more commonly used as a culinary herb in salads, soups, stews and sauces.

GENERAL INFORMATION: This plant as an essential oil crop is very expensive to cultivate. The best oil comes from the root of established plants, so one must wait a few years to get good roots. Essential oil yield is about 1%. The foliage and seeds are very abundant, but the oil from them is not considered as good. This is one of the most beautiful oils to distill. It has a lovely purple color that unfortunately oxidizes to an amber brown. If anyone wants an excuse to home distill, lovage root is one just to witness the purple color. Plant oil is sometimes passed off as the more expensive root oil. You can easily tell the difference by scent and constituency. The leaf oil has a green smell and is much thinner than the light yellow root oil.
