HISTORY INFORMATION: Native American Zuni women drank a tea of Juniper leaves to relax their muscles following delivery. Juniper berries were considered emergency food and were eaten in the winter when food was scarce. The berries were roasted and used as a coffee substitute by Native Americans and pioneers. Juniper berries provide the flavor in gin. In Tibet and Egypt, it is a common ritual incense.
GENERAL INFORMATION: A Juniper berry oil (Communis terpineoliferum) is also available. There is also an oil taken from the branches. It seems to be a little more harsh (and often adulterated) and not used as much for aromatherapy. An inferior branch oil is also available as the by-product of making gin. Junipers masquerade as cedarwoods: Texas cedarwood (Juniperus ashei) and red cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana). Juniper oil is a known urinary tract irritant and those with kidney issues will not tolerate it well. It is highly recommended for clearing toxins and uric acid from the body.
