HISTORY INFORMATION: It is an ancient oil and reference is made to it in the Bible (Psalm 51:7, John 19:20), but most believe this hyssop was referring to an oregano. Still, there are numerous ancient references to it being used medicinally and religiously. As a stewing herb in the Middle Ages, the infusion was applied topically for lice. In England, hyssop baths were taken to relieve aching muscles and joints. Hyssop is a good companion plant for grapes and the honey made from its flowers is very good.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Probably introduced into Europe by Benedictine monks as an ingredient in liqueurs. Still used today in chartreuse. There are four main subspecies of hyssop, with officinalis as the main oil producer. H. officinalis var, decumbens is considered less toxic and best suited for therapy.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A perennial herb growing to 2 feet and up to 4 feet high with slim, pointed leaves bearing purple, white, pink, or blue flowers. It grows best in warm, dry climates.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, aperient, astringent, balsamic, cardiac, carminative, cephalic, cicatrizant, depurative, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, emollient, expectorant, febrifuge, hypertensor, laxative, nervine, parasiticide, pectoral, regulator (blood pressure), resolvent, stimulant (adrenal glands), stomachic, sudorific, tonic (digestion), vermifuge, vulnerary. Used for bruises, cuts, wounds, dermatitis, inflammations, wounds, scars, eyelid infections, asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs, sore throat, rheumatism, gout, normalizing low or high blood pressure, colds, flu, colic, indigestion, stimulating menstrual flow, anxiety, stress. Used to relax, open sinus and breathing passages, uplift moods, revive, improve mental clarity, raise spirituality before rituals (stimulates the medulla oblongata), increase creativity, improve concentration, alleviate craving for caffeine and to relieve grief.

MENTAL USES: I create my own reality. I am responsible for the decisions I make in my life. My feelings are no longer projected but inner-examined to stimulate change in my life.

EMOTIONAL USES: Negative state, pessimistic, gloomy, brooding, blaming, feeling sorry for yourself, unworthy, anxious, stressed TO optimistic, confident of self and the future, calm, relaxed, centered.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate you are moving from a tribal world to a world of individuals. You are wanting to think for yourself and direct your own life. This is a little scary because you are being told through school, the media, your parents, etc. that your choices are bad and will lead you to poverty and ruin. Hyssop is a higher heart oil and helps to balance the higher chakras with the lower chakras. Especially good when one is leaving consensus reality (lower chakras) and becoming an individual who is responsible for their life and choices (higher chakras). It is also good at modulating head (mental) and heart (emotional) so they work well together. Therefore, it is good for meditative states or using before spiritual rituals.

APPLICATIONS: Aroma lamp, bath, compress, diffusor, inhaler, light bulb ring, lotion, massage, mist spray, steam inhalation, steam and sauna room.

WARNINGS\CONTRAINDICATIONS: Nontoxic, but use with caution. Avoid with pregnancy, infants, children, elderly, epilepsy (pinocamphone) and high blood pressure.
