HISTORY INFORMATION: Herbally used in Europe for respiratory problems and for headaches and skin conditions. Also used as an air freshener and an insect repellent.

GENERAL INFORMATION: There is a huge variety of chemical compositions between the different species. Very confusing, and we think that they should be treated differently as there appear to be wide differences in their uses. Italicum is known as the curry plant and can be purchased from local nurseries. The Italicum is the most widely used of the helichrysums. This oil was made famous by the French who noticed that it had remarkable antibruising properties. It seems that Helichrysum has bets-diones or ketone like compounds that have anticoagulant properties.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An herb growing to 2 feet, with a multi-branched stem having a woody base and producing colorful daisy-like flowers that become dry as they mature. After cutting, the flowers retain their color. There are approximately 500 species.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Antihistamine, anti-inflammative, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antitussive, analgesic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cholagogue, cicatrizant, cytophylactic, emollient, expectorant, fungicidal, hepatic, mucolytic, nervine, sedative. Used for skin traumas prevent bruising, acne, allergies, stretch marks, skin inflammations, spots, warts, cuts, wounds, ulcers, old scars, asthma, bronchitis, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, bacterial and viral infections, colds, flu, candida, headaches from liver congestion, herpes, rheumatism, depression, nervous exhaustion, stress related conditions, phobias. Used to relax, reduce stress, open sinus and breathing passages, uplift moods, revive, improve mental clarity, relieve menstrual discomfort, increase muscular endurance, disinfect. Ideal for lymphatic drainage massage.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate that you are ready to turn from selfishness or a material world to self-loving or a more spiritual world. Helichrysum is a higher heart oil. In calling for this oil, you have reached a certain point of spiritual maturity as it generates altruism and a spirit of "all is all right." It is about compassion and understanding you are part of something much grander than you realize. It is about releasing judgments and accepting things and yourself as they are. It is loving yourself now and not "after your diet" or "after you have purified yourself", but right now. It is loving yourself warts and all. Then you can love others completely.

APPLICATIONS: Aftershave, aroma lamp, bath, compress, light bulb ring, inhaler, massage, mist spray, perfume, steam inhalation, steam and sauna room.

WARNINGS\CONTRAINDICATIONS: Nontoxic. Schnaubelt suggests taking it orally in small doses as a liver stimulant.
