HISTORY INFORMATION: Thought to be used in Aztec rituals. The name Hoja Santa, "sacred leaf" comes from this time. It received the english name "root beer plant" for the similarity to sassafras.
GENERAL INFORMATION: The plant is hard to grow outside of tropical environments. The flavor is strongest in the young stems and veins, which have an additional pleasant warm pungency. The species name "auritum" derives from the Latin auris "ear" and means long-eared, referring to the leaves' shape. A popular plant for cooking in Mexico and Central America especially with tamales and fish.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: Perennial that can grow up to 10 ft. Tropical looking with large velvety heart shaped leaves. It grows through its extensive root system like a tree.
