The story goes that a Captain Shaddock in the 18th century brought a citrus tree (C. maxima) to the islands where they crossed it with other citrus. The resulting fruit was called "shaddock" or pomelo fruit. The first grapefruit tree was planted in Florida in 1820. The United States is the largest supplier of grapefruits and the essential oil coming from the peel. Grapefruits are known for their high vitamin C content and resultant protection against infections.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Grapefruit peel contains naringin, used as a flavoring in chocolate and bitter tonic drinks. The seeds also produce an oil which is dark and bitter. It is used in salads and as a cooking oil. Furocoumarins found in citrus cause a photosensitivity, but it seems that in pressed grapefruit oil there is a component which neutralizes this.
