HISTORY INFORMATION: It has been used for centuries in the East as a spice and medicinally. Ginger is used for strengthening the heart, rheumatism, a general tonic, malaria, colds and diarrhea. In Ayurvedic medicine, it was used for liver problems, intestinal gas, hemorrhoids, and anemia. In the West it is best known as a digestive aid. In the 16th century, Henry VIII recommended ginger root as a remedy for the plague. In Asia and the South Pacific, they use ginger in love rituals.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Ginger is an ingredient in perfumery as well as an additive in foods, ginger ale and ginger beer. It is often used as an antioxidant to preserve foods. There is another ginger called cassumar ginger (Zingibar cessumer), coming from Asia. Ginger can be confused with galangal (Alpinia officinarium) which is called "Chinese ginger". Another plant calling itself Chinese ginger (Languas officinarum) can also be called ginger root. Chemical composition varies according to country. Indian has highest zingiberene, Australian has highest bisbolene and geranial, Sri Lanka is high in curmumene, and Madgascar is high in gingenol. Gingerroot essential oil may not be as effective as the whole herb.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An erect perennial herb growing to 3 feet high with a thick, spreading rhizome root that produces a green stalk with narrow spear-shaped leaves, producing delightful white, yellow or pink flowers.

Used to warm, improve circulation, improve digestion, soothe the intestines, relieve flatulence, uplifts moods, improve mental clarity and memory, stimulate entire body, relieve traveling sickness, relieve aches and pains, cleanse the bowels and disinfect. Ginger's ability to tonify the yang energy of the kidneys makes it a useful oil for relieving lower back pain asssoiciated with muscular fatigue.
