The resin was used as a protective covering on burned skin and sores. Used in sweat lodges (Native American saunas) to relieve colds and coughs.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The firs are used as Christmas trees because the needles stay on the tree long after it has been cut. The tree does not produce a true balsam, rather an oleoresin: a mixture of resin and essential oil without benzoic or cinnamic acid. This oleoresin is produced as blisters (small oozings) on the trunk and branches of the tree. Canadian Balsam, an essential oil, is produced from the oleoresin. This oil is very thick, with yellow and green coloring.
