HISTORY INFORMATION: The Romans and Greeks used it to lose weight, promote courage and prolong life. Romans used it for eye problems, especially to improve the sight. The Hindus and Chinese used it for snake and scorpion bites. Fennel was thought to ward off evil spirits during the middle ages. Under the reign of King Edward I of England, his household consumed eight pounds of fennel a month. It is reported that fennel stimulates estrogen in women making it helpful for menstrual problems. Traditionally used for obesity.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Used for treating animals to ease digestion and to stimulate appetite. There is an essential oil made from the leaves without seeds. There is some confusion on bitter and sweet fennel; while some sources do not cite a difference, there is, in fact, a slight chemical difference. Used to treat alcoholics.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A perennial herb growing up to 6 feet high with feathery leaves and yellow flowers. Sweet fennel is slightly shorter than bitter fennel and the leaves are more divided.

Used to improve circulation, improve digestion, soothe and purify the intestines, relieve flatulence, reduce cellulite, reduce stress, promote sleep, help breathing, relieve pain and menstrual discomfort, increase lactation, as a disinfectant and to repel insects.

EMOTIONAL USES: Denial of or not wanting to admit to abuse or damage, making the best of a bad situation TO relief, help at last, knowing things will get better, thankful.
