HISTORY INFORMATION: There are over 700 species of Eucalypti, divided into three groups. The first group is industrial and contain high amounts of terpenes. The second group is medicinal, containing large amounts of eucalyptol or cineol. The third group is aromatic and contains large amounts of citronellal as in Lemon Eucalyptus, or large amounts of piperitone as in Eucalyptus Dives or Broad Leafed Peppermint Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus Radiata or True Eucalyptus falls into the second or medicinal group and it is often used interchangeably with Eucalyptus 80/85. Since the Australians to not export their Blue Gum or Eucalyptus 80/85, this is the Australian equivalent, therefore the name Australian Eucalyptus.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Within the True Eucalyptus radiata species there are four variants. The first is high in cineole, up to 72%; the second is only up to 25% cineole, the third is higher in terpenes and the fourth has pipertone and l-pipertol in it. Good reference for further study is "A Research on the Eucalypts," by Baker and Smith. The Gritman oil is high in cineole, therefore interchangeable with Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus). Radiata is often rectified to increase its cineole up the 80-85 level. You can tell by color. The rectified is clear.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An evergreen tree growing to 170 feet (much smaller than the Eucalyptus globulus) with oval leaves when young, turning to narrow pointed leaves as it matures.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, anticatarrh and expectorant. APPLICATIONS: Aroma lamp, bath, diffusor, inhaler, light bulb ring, liquid candle, massage, mist spray, steam inhalation.

WARNINGS\CONTRAINDICATIONS: Classed as a poison in Australia. Mixed evidence to the safety of oral ingestion. Cineole has shown to alter brain chemistry of sodium and potassium levels making one more prone to seizure. Cineole is not easily digested and the liver can be compromised. Yet there are other authorities that think it is quite safe and site that no known deaths have occurred
