HISTORY INFORMATION: Used by Native Americans to destroy fleas and gnats by burning the plant. They also used it to cure diarrhea. They made a tea from boiled root for menstrual irregularities. A tea from the boiled leaves was used to cure gonorrhea and to treat internal hemorrhage. Listed as a uterine stimulant in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1863-1916. Erigeron means "soon becoming old" as the plant is not considered beautiful, but a weed at its best.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Erigeron seeds were probably imported to Europe with beaver skins, but no matter how it got there, erigeron has naturalized itself in Europe and now throughout most of the world. Some confusion over the insecticidal properties of the plant, as it is called fleawort because its seeds look like fleas (and not because it repels fleas). There is a Native American reference and some scientific research reporting on its insecticidal properties.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A perennial herb growing to a few inches or to 10 feet high with hairy leaves and numerous heads of small, inconspicuous, white flowers.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Astringent, diuretic, hemostatic, insect repellent, insecticide, tonic. Used for diabetes, diarrhea, dysentery, inflamed tonsils, sore throat and kidney disease. Used to purify, repel and kill insects.
MENTAL USES: I know my strength and weaknesses. Bad things happen to good people. The bad is as important to me as the good. I am a whole, functioning human being.
EMOTIONAL USES: Feel like a failure, "no good", ineffective, bad, worthless, sour, bitter feelings, aggressively confrontive, won't take "No" for an answer, rigid, it's always your way, TO feel good about yourself without having to deny the bad, feel whole, able and complete, feel strong and able to deal with life, more fluid and in touch with your feelings.
SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate denial of the spirit or soul within your life. You feel like a failure. It can mean you are caught up in your negative ego and are alienated from your higher self. Erigeron redeems and balances the negative ego so that the negative or "bad things" can be seen in a new light. All experiences are necessary and important. There is no failure. It especially supports the throat chakra.
