HISTORY INFORMATION: Damiana has an ancient herbal history and was/is used for sexual dysfunction and depression. Native Americans used it in special ceremonies to transcend the physical and enter into spiritual realms. Mayan Indians called Damiana "mizib-coc" which means "plant for asthma". They used it for asthma, lung disorders, dizziness, vertigo and as a general cleanser. In Mexico, they used it to treat women's sexual disorders, especially menopausal hot flashes. It also helps relieve exhaustion. It is considered a laxative for children.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Damiana is being studied by several pharmaceutical companies for it aphrodisiac properties. There is evidence that it does strengthen the male sexual system because damiana has high alkaloid content and this may act like testosterone.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A small shrub growing to 3 feet flowering with yellow blooms.
PARTS PROCESSED: Leaves and stems picked while plant is flowering.
PROCESSING METHODS: Steam distilled.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Antidepressant, antiseptic (urinary), aphrodisiac, laxative, tonic (nerve). Used to increase energy, strengthen the nervous system, fortify the sexual system. Used for anxiety, asthma, bronchitis, constipation, cough, depression (brought on by sexual dysfunction), low estrogen, exhaustion, female problems, headaches, hot flashes, impotency, infertility, menopause, PMS, prostate inflammation, a tonic for the nervous and hormonal system.
MENTAL USES: I see the world is ugly and at the same time I see the beauty in it. Where I put my focus is what I will manifest.
EMOTIONAL USES: Feeling ugly, undesired, abused, mean, uncared for, TO feeling beautiful, desired, free of victimization.

You may have forgotten or repressed feelings or experiences that you find mean or uncaring, especially of a sexual nature. The darker side of life can be ignored allowing it entrance or growth because you aren't countering it. You can't see or do not want to see the ugly, dark, abusive side of life. Damiana clears emotional debris from the energy field, allowing you to see that the divine is in the most cruel or mean situations. You are able to see the beautiful in the ugly. It is especially good for the sacral chakra.
