HISTORY INFORMATION: People often think of curry as a spice, but in fact the Tamil word kari means soup or sauce, and refers to a dish cooked in a spicy sauce. However, the British mistakenly applied the word to the mixture of spices used to flavour these dishes, and "curry" has held this alternate meaning ever since. Furthermore, the curry leaf tree is a completely different species from the herb known as the curry plant (Helichrysum angustifolium).
GENERAL INFORMATION: The branches are popular for cleaning teeth and are said to strengthen thee gums and teeth. In India, the curry leaf is used to prevent nausea and to cure stomach upsets. It is also used in treating skin irritations and poisonous bites.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: a small spreading shrub, about 2.5 meters high; the main stem, dark green to brownish, with numerous dots on it; its bark can be peeled off, exposing the white wood underneath. Sweetly scented white flowers. Bears round to oblong fruits.
