The Chinese used it medicinally to break up phlegm, to stop bleeding and for hemorrhoids. They believed it held the secrets to immortality. In Ayurvedic medicine, coriander was used to relieve constipation and help sleep. In the Middle East and Europe, Coriander was prized because of it aphrodisiac properties.
GENERAL INFORMATION: The oil is used in perfumes, candy, chocolate, baked goods, liqueurs such as Chartreuse and Benedictine, and flavoring in tobacco and beer. Also used as a flavoring in pharmaceutical digestive remedies. Cilantro is the name of the coriander plant. Coriander refers only to the seeds of the plant. This causes confusion, as the oils are very different, but coming from the same plant. For even greater confusion the name coriander has Greek origins meaning "smelling like a bed bug", yet it isn't the seed that smells that way, rather the leaves or cilantro. Cilantro and Coriander cannot be interchanged as they have different chemical properties and function.
