Today, they are still woven into baskets and used in festive decoration. The Portuguese called it "coquo" which means kid or small animal, because of the face the nut suggests, with its three holes that simulate the eyes and the mouth. The genus name "coco" stems from it. Nucifera means "bearing the nut" in Latin. Coconut oil is often linked with vows of chastity and protective rituals.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The coconut palm is a plant characteristic of tropical coasts, being grown essentialy world-wide. Coconut is considered one of the ten most useful trees in the world, providing food for millions of people, especially in the tropics. The husk and shell are used as firewood. The heart is edible and is used to make a crisp salad. The sap from the flower stalk is tapped to make tuba, a mildly intoxicating beverage that turns into vinegar when allowed to ferment. The water in the green nut is a sterile, nutrient-laden liquid that is used for drinking. Toasted coconut oil has a different chemical make up

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: The coconut palm may reach to 100 feet or more. The leaves are very large, up to 18 feet long, with lanceolate leaflets up to 3 feet long. The fruits are produced in clusters near the growing tip. They vary in shape, but are generally near globose to oblong, up to a foot or more in length. The nut is encased in a thick, fibrous husk that is persistent and must be cut away to expose the nut. The shell is very hard and woody, near 0.25 inch thick. The edible, oily flesh or kernel adheres to the shell, and is about 0.25 inch thick, with a hollow center that contains a liquid during growth. The dried flesh or meat is the copra of commerce, produced in great quantities mainly for its oil.
