HISTORY INFORMATION: The herb is ancient. Calamus was the holy anointing oil of the Old Testament. In India it is valued in Ayurvedic medicine. In Turkey it is sold candied as a cough drop.Calamus is highly esteemed as an aromatic stimulant and tonic.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Extensively used in cosmetics and perfumes as a fixative. There is some questions to its safety in foods. However, some chewing gums and breath fresheners are produced from the root. Calamus is produced in four main areas with four distinct chemical races: North American (nontoxic), Central Europe (? asarone), Jammu (up to 90% asarone), Kashmir (15% asarone). Asarone is toxic. Acorus calamus var. calamus is the nontoxic calamus.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A reed-like aquatic plant about 3 feet high with sword-shaped leaves and small greenish-yellow flowers. It grows on the margins of lakes and streams with long-branched rhizomes immersed in the mud. The whole plant is aromatic.

PROCESSING METHODS: Steam distilled.
COLOR RANGE: Light yellow.
CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS: Class: Ketone. Beta-asarone (carcinogenic high % ), calameme, calamol, calamenene, eugenol.
YIN\YANG: Yin
PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Anticonvulsant, antiseptic, bactericidal, carminative, diaphoretic, expectorant, hypotensive, insecticide, spasmolytic, stimulant, stomachic, tonic. Used for potpourris.
MENTAL USES: I am not the only one responsible for what has happened. I own my part and I am working with it. I leave you to you. I am responsible for me.
EMOTIONAL USES: Feeling guilty, shamed, blamed, responsible totally, incompetent, TO self-confident, responsible for self, owning your own stuff.
SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate shame is a major motivation in your life. Shame is a black, tar-like substance that clogs your energy body. It is the most debilitating of emotions. Instead of feeling remorse and learning from the experience, you are caught in the goo of shame and all you can do is feel bad with no release, no redemption. You believe you are the problem and there is nothing you can do about it. This is wrong. It is important for you to see where shame plays out in your life and counter it. You can be released from shame. It is about learning from your experiences. It is not about whether you are a good person or not. You know that you are both. This oil is considered toxic unless you are willing to clear the shame. Otherwise it is best not to use this oil.
APPLICATIONS: Not recommended for aromatherapy, bath with proper supervision, compress, massage.
WARNINGS\CONTRAINDICATIONS: Indian Calamus is toxic, plants from North America and Russia seem not to be, but this oil should be held in question until you are sure.
