HISTORY INFORMATION: An ingredient in the famous Bay Rum, used to buy slaves in the 1700's and 1800's. Bay Rum was also used as a hair tonic to prevent hair loss. Can be found in fragrances, soaps, detergents, perfumes, aftershaves, hair lotions and as flavor ingredient in food as well.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Bay and allspice usually grow together. Often harvested, dried, and powdered together to make allspice, the spice used in cooking. There are several different species of bay and they have different chemotypes. The leaves are gathered from trees at least five years old. There is often confusion between laurel leaf or bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) which is not related to this bay. Bay is also not the bayberry shrub or wax myrtle (Myrica pensylvanica). It can be adulterated with allspice or clove.
DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A wild tropical evergreen tree growing up to 50 feet with large aromatic leathery leaves and clusters of white and pink flowers producing aromatic black oval berries.

COLOR RANGE: Dark yellow - amber brown.
CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS: Class: Phenol. Eugenol up to 56%, myrcene, chavicol, methyl eugenol, linalool, limonene.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Analgesic, anticonvulsant, antineuralgic, antiseptic, astringent, stimulant. Used for dandruff, greasy hair, muscular aches and pains, neuralgia, poor circulation, rheumatism, sprains, strains, colds, flu, infectious disease. It helps in the reduction of cellulite. Used to warm, stimulate the scalp, improve circulation, stimulate digestion, purify, calm and reduce stress.
MENTAL USES: Men and women are different and equal. I am my own authority and I need no permission to be myself.
EMOTIONAL USES: Confused, scared, not safe, abused, gender-confused TO released of sorrow and grief over abuse or hurtful acts, gender confident, sense of balance within, able to work well with both women and men, compassionate, feel deeply.
SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate that you have idealized the male species. It is time to correct this. You may have witnessed or experienced awful things like rape and incest. Blame against the rape victim or the spouse as occurred for not making the partner happier. If you have been abused and it could have been severe, you may have blamed yourself. It is not your fault. Be careful and not go the other extreme and idealize women or have women dominate men. It is time to honor both sexes for their feminine masculine qualities. You are both: by elevating one over the other, you create imbalance and the door is open to abuse. We are all different; we are all the same. This paradox is up to you on how you want manifest this in your life. The Goddess is returning to your life. The challenge is not to elevate herself above your Godness. She is returning to balance your life. Bay will heal the trauma and it will help forgive the wrongs that have happened to you.. Bay allows you to realize the grand nature of the self so that ordinary is grand and the grand is ordinary. It is about resolving the paradox of good and evil.
