HISTORY INFORMATION: For centuries in Europe, Balsam Copaiba was used medicinally. In Brazil, copaiba sap is made into a healing ointment for the skin. In South America, it has been used as an incense. The Catholic church sometimes uses it in the place of myrrh.

GENERAL INFORMATION: This is not a true balsam. The crude resin is used as a fixative in perfumes, soaps, cosmetics, detergents and in porcelain painting. The crude resin is pathologically extracted. The trees are drilled with holes and the crude resin is collected. One tree, after it has had holes driven into it, can yield 12 gallons of resin. Several other species that also yield essential oil: C. cerise, C. Guinness, C. lanadortfini, C. matii, C. multijuga, C. reticulata can be Copaibas. Crude balsam hardens with exposure to air and appears to cause some skin sensitivity.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: A wild tropical tree growing up to 60 feet with thick foliage and small yellow flowers producing fruits that turn from brown to red.

PARTS PROCESSED: Crude balsam collected from holes driven into trunk (pathological extraction).

PROCESSING METHODS: Dry distilled.

COLOR RANGE: Pale yellow - greenish.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS: Class: Sesquiterpenes. Up to 50% caryophyllene, bergamotene, acidic agathic acid.

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Anthelmintic, bactericidal, balsamic, disinfectant, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant. Improves circulation, soothing to the intestines. Use to mentally calm, promote sleep. Opens breathing passages and allows deep breathing. Used for intestinal infections, piles, bronchitis, chills, colds, coughs, cystitis, stress-related conditions.

MENTAL USES: I am at peace with myself and my world. My mind is clear and alert. I focus on nothing and my world is at peace.

EMOTIONAL USES: Worried and can't seem to stop thinking about fears or things that could go wrong. TO calm, feeling fully present in body, confident about the future.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate that there is damage to the energy field from excessive worry and fear. Copaiba heals damage caused by fear, anxiety and negative thoughts. Set up a sacred space before using as you may need assistance in clearing some of the negative energy. A sacred space is created by intention. Be clear about what you want to happen. This is your intention. Then secure your boundaries by declaring that you want only energy present for the highest good for everyone involved. Call forth the energies, Christ, your angels, guides, higher self, etc. to be present. Ask them to come and be with you and support the healing. Declare your appreciation and gratitude for their presence. Light a candle. When you feel the space is ready, begin your work with the oils. Also Copaiba quiets the mind for meditation, and it is very appropriate to use before any meditation sessions.
