HISTORY INFORMATION: Anise seed has a long tradition in cooking and medicine. Egyptians used it in their breads for its carminative effects as well as medicinally, especially for high blood pressure, heart and lung disease, and calming pain. It was also used to increase milk flow in nursing mothers. You'll find it in Greek ouzo and the Turkish raki.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Anise seed has no relationship to Star Anise (Illicium verum), although they have a similar aroma. There is also a Japanese star anise (I. lanceolatum), but it is poisonous. Anise seed is primarily used as a spice. Anetole which is a major constituent in anise oil has ben reported to exhibit spasmolytic properties, to stimulate respirator secretions and expectoration.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: An annual herb growing 1 to 2 feet in height, with fern-like delicate leaves bearing white flowers in umbrels producing seed.

PARTS PROCESSED: Seeds, leaves.

PROCESSING METHODS: Crushed, steam distilled.

COLOR RANGE: Clear to pale yellow.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS: Class: Ether. Primarily anethole (up to 90%), anisol, anisic aldehyde, methylchavicol.

YIN\YANG: Yang/yin

PHYSICAL ACTIONS AND USES: Antiseptic, antispasmodic (nerves and muscles), aphrodisiac, carminative, tonic (circulatory system and digestive tract),and stimulant (especially for cardiac fatigue). Used for its estrogen-like properties, childbirth and lactation, menopause, dyspepsia, colitis, palpitations, asthma and poor breathing due to psychological factors. Can be a skin sensitizer, but is used for lice, scabies and some infectious skin diseases. Use for hard, dry coughs where expectoration is difficult - cough lozenges. Women often site the scent of licorice or Good and Plenty as the most sexually arousing.

MENTAL USES: I can face whatever is in my life. I can feel pain and process it easily and effortless. My loss is manageable.

EMOTIONAL USES: Denial, repression of trauma or pain, blocked TO acceptance, the real truth is known and felt fully, confidence in dealing with life's pain.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate that you are in denial as to the amount of pain in your life. You know that you have the strength to face what is bothering you, but your are lacking the motivation. Anise allows you to see and feel all aspects of life. You can see and hear the bad as well as the good. It motivates you to completely take part in life, knowing that you cannot be alone or left out.

APPLICATIONS: Bath (with proper fixed oil), compress, cooking, cough drops, inhaler, light bulb ring, liquid candle, massage, mist spray, steam inhalation, tea or drink.

WARNINGS\CONTRAINDICATIONS: Possible skin sensitizer, excessive use could cause sluggishness, avoid in pregnancy, generally safe if used in low dosage.
