HISTORY INFORMATION: Allspice was first called pimento (Spanish for pepper) because it was thought to be a kind of pepper. Later it was realized that it was closer to cloves and cinnamon with a hint of nutmeg; therefore the name Allspice. It is also called Jamaican Pepper as it is a major export in Jamaica and is considered to be the best Allspice. Pimento Dram is a beverage on the island which was once made by the Aztecs called Chocolada. Mayans used it for embalming. Dentists used eugenol, a main constituent of Allspice, as a local anesthetic for gums. It is still found in over-the-counter toothache remedies.

GENERAL INFORMATION: When allspice is steam distilled, there is a separation or fraction of very light and very heavy chemicals. These two are then collected and mixed to form the oil. Allspice only grows within the West Indies and some South American countries despite many attempts at transplanting elsewhere. The green fruits are only harvested after the tree is at least eight years old. If allowed to ripen, they loose scent. There is also an oil made from the leaves. The Berry oil is considered better, as it doesn't have as much eugenol as the leaf oil and is better for sensitive skin. The berry oil can be adulterated with clove, stem or leaf oil. This is a fiery oil and must be used with care.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT: Allspice is an evergreen tree growing to 40 feet plus. It has leathery leaves and small white flowers that develop into aromatic berries. Each fruit contains two kidney-shaped green seeds which turn black when ripe.

PARTS PROCESSED: Primarily seeds, also leaves.

PROCESSING METHODS: Steam distilled, primarily from the shells of the berries. Steam distilled leaves.

EMOTIONAL USES: Angry, speaking harshly or have been spoken harshly to, depressed, feeling hurt, a lump in the throat, dejected TO calm, uplifted, feeling you can hold your own, not afraid of anger or conflict.

SPIRITUAL USES: Can indicate you give your power away. What others say and do is more important than what you say and do. You are angry and you may not even be aware of it. Allspice clears anger from the energy field and balances the throat chakra. It is very important to come to terms with our anger and learn how to use it appropriately. Very often you see anger as being projected - others are angry, or your angry is their fault and the language tends to be "you made me". Anger can give you an excuse to blame others and hold yourself not responsible for your feelings. Anger can point out controlling behavior or feeling stuck and frustrated. Why am I getting angry? It does not have anything to do with being right, but being hurt. As we become more responsible for our feelings and begin to use our anger to help us to grow, the anger oils will not be seen as toxic. We will begin to see them as an aid to get more in touch with ourselves and our world, so that love becomes a more common expression than anger.

APPLICATIONS: Bath (with proper fixed oil), diffusor, inhaler, massage, mist spray, steam inhalation.
